We’re 20 years into the learning management system era, and still most LMS, LCMS and similar tools rarely give their users strategic insight to the health of their learning strategies, or show alignment with the goals of the businesses they support. Learning will only truly be valued as a strategic partner by stakeholders when it can prove with hard numbers the value it adds to generating successful business outcomes.
Most LMSes can track very detailed amounts of data on who took what, when, and how. But quickly getting strategic information OUT of these tools is often a big time and resource drain. 2007 research by Expertus and TrainingOutsourcing.com showed that a majority of learning executives were now using expensive workarounds – custom report-writing FTE, homegrown Excel applications, and more - to pull needed information from their LMS.
Workarounds are costly, don’t scale, and still usually produce time-delayed information. LMSes aren’t going away, but it’s no longer acceptable for decision makers not to always know the status of their initiatives.
Most large learning units handle dozens of content and curricula development projects per year, often in addition to updates and upgrades to their technology platforms and other administrative projects. - Our strategy process defines your key learning indicators and measures of progress. These key measures are automatically collected from your LMS, LCMS, HR, or other business system.
- Using targets defined for each key measure, Impact Dashboard aggregates and calculates the health of your initiatives to report progress and potential risks.
- Overall work effort required to execute the strategy and influence your key measures is managed and monitored in a centralized and systematic manner.
Tactical scorecards, on the other hand, streamline access to the specific metrics you want to monitor and manage, without requiring linkage to higher level goals and objecives. This simple tactical approach to measurement gives you a quick snapshot of the key measures that are important to your organization, where they are trending, and where they need to be.
- Each scorecard gets titled (e.g. Operations, Effectiveness) to describe what metrics will be displayed.
- Key measures get defined and added to the scorecard, allowing users to select the graph type and number of periods to display.
- Impact Dashboard links directly to your key measure data sources to pull in measurement data on a scheduled, recurring basis.
